Summer 1818 – Dues for a Dead Empire

“All things pass,” Father said. “All empires, all kingdoms, all of us. What does not pass, changes. The man you want existed four centuries ago. He is gone now.”

“He can return. He must return. His sword must rise to bring down blood for the fields,” said the priest.

Father laughed. “That sword didn’t rise for the fields. It sought the heart of a god. And when it found that heart I threw it away.”
