Summer 1872 – A Specter of Flies

We wrapped the scarves securely around our ears, noses and mouths, tying the ends below our chins so that we would have easy access to the knots. To Padilla I said,”This will be frightening. The heat will make you itch. You will hear voices in the buzzings. Do not listen to them. Listen only to me. Do not remove the scarf. Do not loosen it, no matter how good an idea it seems. Do not  allow any of the flies to enter you. If that occurs, I may not be able to save you.”

Padilla nodded. He lifted his crucifix and kissed it through the scarf.
