Winter 1903 – The Woman in Red

She stood upon the snow, just outside the light cast by the open door. She said, “I have been told that you might be of service to me. Are you Rose Taylor?”

I set down the armload of firewood just inside the house and turned to look at her. The snow was at least three feet deep but she stood upon it as if she weighed no more than a hare. I said, “I am Briar Rose Taylor, daughter of Red Taylor, granddaughter of Thousand Spider Mother. I am a Sheriff of the Border Roads. The only one in these parts, I believe. What can I do for you?”

She stepped into the light. Her skin was as pale as the snow and her hair was as red as her cloak. She said, “I need you to help me kill a wolf.”
