Winter 1945 – Like the Sound of a Melon Being Split


Mrs. Brown folded her arms and glared. She expected to be challenged on her story. 

I asked, “How tall was the little man? Two feet tall? Or three?” 

She said, “He was almost to my belly but he looked taller because of his red cap.”

I gaged her height without speaking. The little man would have been just over two feet in height. If the rest of Mrs. Brown’s description were accurate, the little man’s blade was about a foot in length.
