Hieronymous North nodded in acknowledgement. He said, “I know of the Sodality by reputation, mostly through rumors and wild tales told by colleagues that I would not trust to hold a bedpan, let alone a scalpel. They sound like mad scientists and alchemists. I have a medical degree. I have a degree in chemistry. It is through chemistry that I have found my success. I work methodically. I test. I theorize. I retest.”

I gripped the chain links of my cage. I said, “Your tests are killing people.”

North nodded. “That is an unfortunate and wholly unintended consequence. I am attempting to prolong life. When I am successful I will turn myself in face whatever justice society deems appropriate. I am keeping very thorough records.”
