Winter 1970 – A Friend in Dark and Lonely Places

 

“His name is Peter Patches,” Audrey said. “He used to belong to my Mommy but he got old and Mommy had to sew him new skin to hold him together. It makes him look kind of funny.” 

I nodded. I said, “I have seen Peter. He is unique looking.”

Audrey’s expression grew solemn. She asked, “Is he okay? Mrs. Toomes threw him to that dog and I thought it tore him up. I cried so much.”

I squeezed her shoulder. “I think that dog is very sorry he ever met Peter.”
