Section H Final

This the illustration that grew out of the sketch I posted yesterday. It’s not bad but, honestly, I think would have done a better piece (and finished it faster) if I’d done the whole thing in pen and ink or in pencil. I spent a ridiculously long time playing around in Photoshop trying to get the look and effects I wanted. Still, I learned a lot in the process. (Mostly that trying to do everything in Photoshop was doing it the hard way.)

Section H Sketch

The Day Job has been keeping me pretty busy. Busy enough that I’ve honestly been forgetting to post. It’s a lame excuse even if it’s true.

This is the original sketch for the first illustration I did for The Black Seal #1 back in 2003. I’d learned just enough Photoshop that I deluded myself into thinking I could use the program to create an illustration from this sketch. Tomorrow I’ll post the result and you can decide whether I succeeded.

And Then There Are All the Projects I’m Not Working On … Yet

And what have we learned so far? Not much really. I’m terribly over committed. Really, really over committed when you consider that on most days of the week I have less than an hour available to draw. I don’t know if I’d manage to get more done on any individual project if I had more time available or if I’d just gludge things up by committing to more projects. I’m kind of stupid that way.

And how go things on my other projects?

This post 1708. 292 to go. I really need to scan some art. These progress reports are going to get dull pretty quickly.

Progress Report – Skook Sketchblog

And finally, I need to scan more images so I have something for you to look at every day. I know, no one is dying of suspense waiting for the next sketch or resurrected childhood drawing but posting here on a regular basis is a good way for me to pay attention to the passing of time.

I also need to repost the addresses of the blogs and websites of friends, acquaintances and regularly read complete strangers. I lost my list when I updated my template months ago and have only just now started recreating it.

My current thinking is that on post 2000 I’ll retire this blog. I expect to continue some sort of regular posting but, if all goes well, it will be at DavidLeeIngersoll.com. This is post 1707. 293 to go.

(Note to self – put this stuff into a spreadsheet or something. Slob.)

Progress Report – DavidLeeIngersoll.com

Drat. Missed a day.

I own DavidLeeIngersoll.com and DavidIngersoll.com. At the moment both those addresses point here. Eventually I’d like there to be a website at that address. Something professional and attractive that shows off my portfolio quickly and simply. At the moment I have to admit I haven’t even come up with a rough sketch for what I’d like the site to look like. The most thought I’ve put to it in the last few years was/is this post. So, a long way to go with that project.

Progress Report – 2011 Illustrated Fiction Blog

Way back in 2009, when my day job was a much different animal than it is right now, I had a lot of time on my hands. Much of the time my job involved me waiting for the phone to ring. That was one of the advantages we had over most of our competitors; someone was there to answer the phone when a potential customer called. Because we wanted me to be as responsive as possible I had a lot of unscheduled time. I never wanted to read a book while on the job, or play games online or watch videos or do anything that would cut down on my ability to pay attention to a customer when needed. So I spent a lot of time waiting. Eventually I started spending some of that time sketching and eventually I started to think that I could sketch with a goal in mind. And thus was born 365 Bumps in the Night.

What exactly 365 Bumps is will have to wait until January 31st. Hopefully that will be January 31st of 2011 but I originally hoped to start this project on January 31st of this year and that obviously didn’t happen. There will be 366 posts in the project – one character drawing plus some text that will give some context to the illustration. The stages for each character drawing goes from sketch to inks to shading to photoshopping and posting. Here’s where I am so far –

Progress Report – Oziana Submission

This one might be finished. It might have some lettering still to be done. It might require some more illustrations. It all depends on what the writer finally decides. It’s a comic that has mostly been accepted for a near future issue of the Oziana. Currently there are nine pages finished. I just can’t take the project off my plate until I know what might need to be done and it’s been sent to the Oziana editor.

Progress Report – The Last Moe and Detritus Story (minicomic)

Back in May Indigo Kelleigh invited me to contribute to a minicomics anthology box that he is putting together for the 2011 Stumptown Comics Festival. It’s been … decades … since I did a minicomic, long enough ago that I’ve forgotten how much work they could be. I probably would have said yes even if I hadn’t had a story in mind. I’ll be bringing back Moe and Detritus for a final story. Nobody dies. The world doesn’t end. It’s mostly so I can let the versions of Moe and Detritus that I was writing back in the ’90s head off into their own worlds. Versions of those characters still live in my head but I’m a different person than the guy who wrote Misspent Youths and so they are different people as well. No doubt versions of them will appear in another project somewhere down the line.

This is an eight page black and white minicomic. At the moment the script is still unfinished. So. Not much progress to report yet.

Progress Report – The Black Seal Vietnam Special – Comic

One unfinished project that’s been lurking for, literally years, is the comic I’m illustrating for the special Vietnam issue of The Black Seal. It’s a five page story. Nick Brownlow wrote the script back in 2003. I got started on it back then, got sidetracked with other things, the special issue itself got sidetracked and eventually the unfinished art ended up packed away when Nizzibet and I moved in December.

Earlier this spring the Black Seal guys started pulling the Vietnam special out of mothballs and it’s alive again. Articles are being finished and revised. It’s destined for print sooner rather than someday. Unfortunately I couldn’t remember which box the art was in and unpacking all the possible boxes it might be in in order to find it would have resulted in a mess I wasn’t ready to clean up. Fortunately I happened across it quite by accident last week while unpacking another box for an unrelated reason.

Since the art for this piece is intended for black and white publication and since I’m also the letterer the stages for it are different than Oz Squad. The progress for this one goes – Roughs, Lettering, Pencils, Inks, Shading, Photoshopping. As with Oz Squad, if one part of a page isn’t finished the page can’t be considered finished. So, here’s how the story Sacrifice stands –
